Sports Program

Soccer Stars Program Video

Based on the belief that sport should be readily available, accessible and inclusive for all children, the Vinnies Soccer Stars Program offers children from the Brisbane region the opportunity to play recreational soccer free of charge.

The program is a youth initiative of the St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland and is open to children aged between 8-11 years old. The program is held fortnightly on a Saturday from 9.00am-10.30am.

Soccer Stars focuses on developing friendships, providing positive role models, team building, and increasing self-confidence. It provides a safe, healthy and positive environment for children, where they can fully experience the physical, psychological and social benefits of team sport. To ensure all participants can participate freely, shin pads and socks are given to all children on the program.

The program also gives parents of the children an opportunity to have a break. Children are provided morning tea, catered for by the St Vincent de Paul Society.

What is the sports stars program?

There are a range of reasons why children from some communities may be less likely to participate in sport. Cost is a major one. Fees, uniforms, equipment and transport costs are prohibitive for families on low income. Involvement in sport provides multiple benefits for children. These include better physical and mental health, increase confidence, self-esteem and a sense of identity.

THE VOLUNTEERS IN OUR PROGRAM

  • Have a willingness to work with children in an unconditionally enthusiastic and positive manner.
  • Support the learning needs of children through providing positive role models, who inspire, instruct and promote the values of sportsmanship.
  • Encourage children to have fun and learn skills and techniques.

WHY?

Research shows, significant numbers of children aren’t participating in any sport outside school. There are a range of reasons why children from some
communities may be less likely to participate in sport. Cost is a major one. Fees, uniforms, equipment and transport costs are prohibitive for families
on low incomes.

Research shows that involvement in sports provides multiple benefits for children. These include better physical and mental health, increased
confidence, self-esteem and a sense of identity.

Involvement creates a sense of belonging and connection with their peers and it helps enhance a child’s belief in what they can achieve.
